This is the start of a new series about rebuilding my homelab from the ground up. Later posts will cover the platform, applications, data and lessons from the journey. This first part is about the decision that shaped everything afterwards: I was not looking for a like-for-like upgrade. I wanted a full-scale modernization.
I have written about my tiny yet powerful homelab before. It runs quite a few things for my home, including Pi-hole and a Kubernetes cluster, so when its network goes down I notice it very quickly!
The first application that I have deployed in my homelab is the home surveillance capture and feed system. I needed to set up surveillance cameras at home mainly because of my baby daughter. There are so many cameras to buy from the market with everything set up nicely and can even provide live feed through their apps, but I just DON’T trust their security at all! There are so so many hacks, not just for cameras at home, and also cameras at corprations. So I have decided to roll my own system and keep everything within my home network.
This is the start of a long overdue blog series to show you my homelab after the Pi day of 2021. But first, why do I need my homelab? Aside from the fun and excitement of building an entire server cluster on your own, it has a number of benefits:

我每天醒來第一件事便是打開台上的MacBook，查一下整晚我收到的郵件有什麼，然後看一下Facebook有什麼notification。然而今天早上，我被Facebook上的一條share震驚了：Google Reader將於7月1號關閉。一直都有Google Reader要被關閉的傳言，竟然在今天成真，我是一點心理準備都沒有的，因爲Google Reader是我使用的Google的服務的頻率上僅次於Gmail的。然後整天我都在關注這條新聞，各種關於Google Reader的分析，還有就是有那些好用的替代服務。過了一天，心情稍微平復了，但還是不禁覺得唏噓，因爲Google Reader的關閉正正就成爲了這個信息碎片化的時代最佳的註腳。
